Electric bike charging at a shopping centre

Customers and tenant staff already arrive by electric bike. They charge from whatever socket they can find in the back office, or do not charge at all because there is no designated charging point.

We turn that into a single managed installation: a dedicated circuit, energy metering on every charging point, access granted from a panel. Which line fits depends on where the bikes are actually parked.

What fits your building

An underground garage is the usual situation in shopping centres, and usually the reason a shelter gets ruled out before the conversation starts. Both products can still be used on the same property: the Box in the underground garage, the bike room and the hall, and the Shelter at the entrance or surface car park.

ChargeGo Box

A wall-mounted station for indoor spaces. No structure or foundation is needed, because the unit hangs on the wall of the existing building. That removes the most common obstacle in shopping centres: the lack of space by the entrance.

ChargeGo Shelter

A freestanding structure with solar panels on the roof and battery storage. It operates with no grid connection, so there is no need to run power across the plaza, and it is visible from street level.

  • 1.74–3.48 kWp of solar panels, ~1.8–6 kWh LFP battery, operating range −20 °C to +45 °C
  • 3–10 Schuko 230 V sockets, each with current metering; if the current exceeds the set threshold, the station disconnects that charging point. Total output is capped by a 3,000 VA inverter
  • Open Shelter with 10 charging points, or a lockable Shelter with doors and locks for 3 or 6 charging points
  • 6.4 × 3.2 × 2.7 m, about 20 m² footprint. From €18,500 excl. VAT

The two lines work together in one building: a Box in the underground garage serves tenant staff and bikes left for a full shift, while a Shelter at the entrance provides a visible charging option for customers.

Customers can charge while they shop, so they have enough battery for the ride home. That also gives food and sports tenants an argument for their own messaging.

A shopping centre employs several hundred people across dozens of units, and some commute by electric bike and leave it parked for a full shift. Today they charge from whatever socket they find in the back office. One designated spot in the garage or bike room turns that into a managed installation.

BREEAM In-Use scores facilities for cyclists (the Tra category). What counts is an equipped, lit and secure spot for bikes, either in the underground garage or by the entrance. The assessor confirms the final score for the specific protocol.

The panel shows the number of sessions and the energy drawn, broken down per charging point. That data feeds the building's ESG report and its marketing communication.

A visible signal at the entrance
Solar panels on the roof and a structure painted in the centre's own colours make the shelter visible from the entrance area. This applies to the outdoor line only.

One circuit, no changes to the switchboard
Eight charging points on a single 230 V / 16 A circuit, existing or run by us. A full set of electrical protections is housed inside the unit's enclosure.

Mounting locations in a centre

The mounting location decides which line fits. Below are the four layouts that come up most often in shopping centres.

Underground garage, by a lift or stairwellChargeGo Box only
The shortest route to the centre's entrance, and the place where the bike would be left anyway. The station needs a wall and a supplied 230 V / 16 A circuit, with no changes to the site layout and no work on the facade.
Bike room or back-office corridor for tenant staffChargeGo Box only
Employee bikes are parked there for a full shift, which gives the longest and most predictable sessions in the building. The administrator grants access in the panel and revokes it once a tenant's staff member leaves.
Entrance area on the pedestrian sideShelter only
A shelter in plain sight signals that arriving by bike is an option here. It operates with no grid connection, so there is no need to run power across the plaza in front of the entrance.
Surface car park, near the sports zone or food courtShelter only
Each shelter takes up about 20 m² of footprint. The lockable variant with doors and locks suits places where a bike is left unattended, with 3 or 6 charging points.

Billing models

Both lines

The panel and the app are the same across both lines, so you choose the billing model independently of whether the charging station is in the garage or by the entrance.

Free for customers
The simplest option to run: there are no payments to handle, and charging becomes part of what the building offers. With a Shelter the energy comes from the roof-mounted solar panels; with a Box it is drawn from the building's own circuit and visible down to the kWh in the panel.
Free for members, paid for everyone else
A customer enrolled in the loyalty programme charges at no cost, and everyone else pays per session or per kWh drawn. The administrator grants and revokes access in the panel, with no cards or badges involved.

Metering per charging point and per session is what makes charging fees possible. The building sets its own rate and billing method; the station supplies the data.

Certification and ESG reporting for retail

Shopping centres report ESG (international chains, REIT funds) and renew their BREEAM In-Use certification. An equipped spot for bikes counts whether it is in the underground garage (ChargeGo Box) or by the entrance (Shelter). The two lines differ only where energy from a renewable source is scored, because solar panels come with the outdoor line.
