Potential contribution to BREEAM, LEED, WELL and DGNB certification
A solar bike shelter with e-bike charging helps meet the requirements of four major green building certification systems, in the transport, mobility and wellbeing categories. It fits BREEAM most directly (cycling infrastructure, e-bike charging, comfort, security); in LEED and WELL it is one element of a broader credit that also needs long-term storage, showers and access to a cycling network.
Where a shelter can support earning credits

BREEAM Tra 03 (Cyclist Facilities)
The most detailed system on cycling infrastructure. The Tra 03 criterion scores the number and quality of parking spaces, and how many credits a project earns depends on the building's occupancy and the rest of the facility.
Credit 1: ratio of spaces to occupants
1 ptAt least 1 cycle parking space per 10 regular building occupants (residents / employees / students). A shelter with 10 charging points covers a building with 100 occupants.
Credit 2: increased provision (1:7)
+1 ptA ratio of 1:7 (1 parking space per 7 occupants) or better. This credit rewards a higher share of cycling infrastructure, for example in "bike-friendly" residential schemes and offices.
Credit 3: security and comfort
+1 ptCovered, well-lit spaces (≥ 50 lx) with the option of monitoring by camera or visibility from the building. Frame locking, not just the wheel.
Credit 4: low-emission vehicle support
+1 ptCharging for e-bikes and e-scooters. A credit often missed by "shelter only" projects, because it needs electrical infrastructure for low-emission vehicles.
LEED v4.1 LT Bicycle Facilities
An American system, popular with international corporations. LT (Location and Transportation) includes the Bicycle Facilities credit, which a solar shelter helps meet. The final score also depends on the building type, the cycling network and sanitary facilities; showers and changing rooms are required for some project types.
Long-term storage
1 ptLong-term spaces (≥4 hours) for at least 5% of regular building occupants. Must be covered and secure. For an office with 200 employees, that's 10 spaces.
Security, lighting and location
+1 ptSpaces within 200 feet (~60 m) of the main entrance, well lit, with monitoring. A structure that protects against theft (frame locking, not just the wheel).
WELL v2 Movement (active mobility)
The newest of the four, focused on occupant health. The Movement concept rewards strategies that support active commuting, movement and healthy habits, and a shelter is one piece of infrastructure for active occupants. How features map to points (V01, V04 and so on) depends on the WELL scorecard and a consultant's confirmation.
Min. 1 parking space per 40 regular building occupants. So for 200 employees, that's 5 spaces.
Cover, lighting ≥50 lx, protection against vandalism (monitoring or visibility).
Support for active transport: e-bike charging counts as active mobility infrastructure.
DGNB Mobility Infrastructure
A German system, popular in Poland on projects financed with DACH capital (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). More comprehensive in the mobility area.
DGNB's "Mobility Infrastructure" category assesses support for sustainable mobility. A bike shelter with charging counts toward several sub-categories at once, with a DGNB auditor making the final assessment:
- Bicycle infrastructure — covered parking spaces
- E-mobility integration — electric bike charging
- Renewable energy on site — roof-mounted photovoltaics, renewables category
- Comfort & safety — lighting, monitoring, intuitive operation
A contribution to the Mobility category, particularly relevant for multi-family residential projects aiming for DGNB Gold or Platinum. Final qualification depends on the assessor and the version of the system.
Which system to choose
The choice of certification system follows the investment context rather than the shelter: the capital behind it, the country, the building category.
The most common system in Poland for office and residential projects. A British system, with a Polish chapter (BRE Polska). Suited to commercial-lease investments.
The standard for international corporations with US capital. Many large global tenants require LEED when choosing an office.
The newest system, focused on employee health. Often added as an overlay certification alongside BREEAM/LEED. Popular in modern Class A+ offices.
A German standard. Used on projects financed with DACH capital, especially residential and logistics schemes.
When to add a shelter to the project cycle
A certification pre-assessment estimates possible credits from the concept design. Cycling infrastructure added at this stage needs no later revision of the site plan.
BREEAM/LEED pre-assessment
The assessor determines the potential number of credits, including for the shelter. This is when you decide the ratio of spaces to occupants, how many shelters, and where on the site.
Shelter specification in the documentation
The shelter appears in the site development plan. Specify the exact model, dimensions and materials, because the assessor checks the supplier's documentation.
Installed alongside the building
The shelter is usually installed in parallel with the main building. Installing it after handover works too, though the certification documentation takes more effort to complete.
Inspection and credit award
The auditor inspects the site, verifies the number of spaces and checks the supplier's documentation (CE, certificates) against the declarations. ChargeGo shelters ship with a ready documentation package.
Every 3–5 years
BREEAM In-Use and LEED EBOM are renewed on a cycle. Infrastructure already in place is reassessed at renewal rather than rebuilt.
Questions about shelters and certification
When is it worth considering cycling infrastructure as part of a certification path?+
When the project already plans cycle parking. The transport criteria are then met with a one-off investment and no ongoing running costs. Cost per credit depends on the specific project, which the assessor or consultant prices out.
At what point in the design cycle should we think about a shelter?+
As early as possible: at the concept stage and the BREEAM/LEED pre-assessment, when the auditor makes an initial estimate of achievable credits. Adding a shelter at the construction stage works too, and requires revising the site development plan. For buildings renewing a certification (In-Use), it can go in at any point in the cycle.
Does a shelter on an adjacent plot (for example a municipal car park) also count?+
For BREEAM, usually yes, if the distance from the main entrance is no more than 100 m and the facility is accessible to the building's users. LEED has a similar requirement (100 ft = 30 m for short-term, 200 ft for long-term). The exact requirement depends on the protocol (NC, EBOM, ID+C), so confirm with your assessor.
Does a shelter without charging still count?+
The transport criteria are built around cycle parking spaces: covered, lit and secured. E-bike charging is a separate strand, under the criteria on low-emission vehicles and active mobility. An assessor evaluates both.
